The current and on-going economic crisis has changed the lives of many Orange County residents but none more than the working poor. As you can imagine, demand is up at the Second Harvest Food Bank in Orange County. Way up. Many of the requests for aid are coming from families that have lost their jobs, have been forced out of their homes by foreclosures or are facing pay reductions at work. The reality they face is very different from yours and mine. Try to imagine their journey as they struggle in minimum wage jobs, travel home at the end of the day across town by foot, bike or bus to where they live with their children to figure out dinner. In many cases, these individuals need to make a decision to use their wages to pay their rent or mortgages, buy food or pay for medical treatment. These families need our help to provide food, the most basic of human needs for themselves and their children. They don’t need a handout, just a hand up. The Food Bank depends on the funds raised by the Harvesters year after year for the hunger relief programs that help these families. It is through the generosity of our donors that the Food Bank has been able to implement and sustain so many wonderful initiatives that address the issues that hunger presents within our community. From the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you to all of our generous supporters. More than ever, we need you all to join us in this time of great need.
